Small Scale Cottonseed Oil Milling Plant

Cleaning: Getting rid of organic impurity (stems and leaves, hull, rope, etc.), inorganic impurity (dust, silt, pebbles and metals), oiliness impurity(grain of insects, grain of faultiness, heterogeneity seeds, etc.). In this section we use Magnetic Separator, Vibrating Sieve, de-stoner, decorticator (Cotton seeds used hammering decorticator).  Through cleaning the impurity, you can reduce the lost of oil & improve the oil yield and the environment of production plant. The material has been produced after pretreatment contains the impurities ≤ 0.1%.

Cotton Seed Oil Dehulling

Cracking: Adopting the toothed cracking roller to make the cotton seeds kernel into a right uniform pcs which can keep a moderate block size for squeezing out the oil.

Flaking: To make cracked Cotton seeds kernel pcs into uniform smaller flakes with thickness ≤ 0.5mm, less powder, non-oil spilled, pinching  softly by hand and  the ratio of smaller powder than 1mm sieve mesh is ≤ 10% - -15%.

Cooking: The process is to add the steam into the crushed/flaked seeds pcs, then to dry the seeds for getting rid off more water content. In this process, changing the protein of seeds with the water and temperature to make the oil moleculeo loose for pressing easily to get crude oil also get the better cake and oil. We adopt vertical stack cooker with five layers to cook flakes. Loading full in the 1-2 layers, played the purpose of steaming flakes, and then the temperature reached 95 – 100 degrees,  In 3-5 layers should loaded to shallow, controlled about 40% which could get rid of water from flakes.  The pressure of jacket steam is ≤ 0.6MPa. The temperature and water rate of flakes after cooking is:
Water Content: 12–14 %; Temperature: 95–100 degrees; Requiring Time: 60mins.

Expelling: Matching the modern style cotton seed oil expeller to get more oil, or you can use solvent after pre-pressing by oil expellers to get more oil. Solvent extraction is the commonly used commercial technique to recover oil from oilseeds.

Cottonseeds Pretreatment and Prepressing Workshop


Cottonseeds Delinting: If your cottonseeds are with lint, then you need to add cottonseed delinting machine in the cottonseed oil plant.

Cottonseed Cleaning: Cleaning is to remove the various impurities in the cottonseeds by cottonseed cleaning equipment. Cottonseed cleaning equipment for the cottonseed oil plant includes winnower, vibrating screen, magnetic separator, etc. The winnower can remove light impurities and dust as well as heavy impurities like stone and metal in the cottonseeds; The vibrating screen is to remove the large and small impurities; The magnetic separator is to remove the metal impurities in the cottonseeds.

Cottonseed Dehulling: Cottonseed contains 40%-55% of hulls and the hull contains only 0.3-1% of the oil. Cottonseed contains 14%-25% of oil and the kernels contain 30-40%. In addition, the hulls also contain brown pigment, pesticide residue, wax, and lint. Hulling cottonseeds can increase the handling capacity of oil press and increase oil yield, improve the quality of crude oil and meal. Cottonseed hulls can be used for cultivating mushroom and used as livestock feed, etc.

Kernel and Hull Separation: The effect of kernels and hulls separation can affect the oil yield and the quality of oil and meal. Vibrating screen is adopted in the cottonseed oil mill plant to separate kernels and hulls. The hulls are further processed by the hull beater to separate the kernel pieces in hulls.

Flaking: Flaking process makes the cottonseeds into flakes and destroys the cell walls, which can largely shorten the oil path so that to increase the oil-yielding speed and oil yield. Cottonseed oil processing plant adopts hydraulic flaking roller which can guarantee the uniform thickness of the cottonseed flakes. The roller has high hardness and stable performance.

Cooking: Cottonseed oil processing plant adopts vertical cooker for the cooking process. The flakes from the flaking roller enter the vertical cooker. By high temperature and high moisture cooking, the temperature and moisture of cottonseed flakes are adjusted, the free gossypol content of the crude oil is reduced and the quality of the crude oil is improved.

Cottonseed Oil Pressing and Filteration

Prepressing: Cottonseeds can be once-pressed and then sent to the cottonseed oil refinery plant directly. For the capacity of more than 20 tons per day, usually, solvent extraction method is adopted with cottonseed oil pre-press used to extract part of the oil. The machine has a large capacity and the cake has low residual oil rate and is easy for solvent penetration.

Filtration: The oil residue is separated from the oil by the oil residue scraper, and then the oil is filtered by the leaf filter. The filtered oil is pumped into the crude oil tank. The pre-pressed cake is sent to the solvent extraction workshop. The leaf filter used for the cottonseed oil processing plant has the features of high precision, easy to discharge the residue.

Cottonseed Oil Extraction: Oil extraction is using the organic solvent to extract oil from the pre-pressed cake inside the oil extractor. Multiple oil extractors such as loop type extractor, rotocel extractor and towline extractor can be used for the cottonseed oil extraction plant. After oil extraction, miscella and the solvent containing wet meal are obtained. The miscella is pumped into the hydrocyclone to remove the fines and then the miscella enters the miscella tank in the cottonseed oil extraction plant. Desolventizing: The wet meal from the oil extractor enters the DTDC desolventizing the cottonseed oil extraction plant.

Solvent recovery: The solvent vapor enters the condensing system. The solvent recycled enters the solvent holding tank for circulation. The wastewater is discharged into the water seal tank. The vent gas in the cottonseed oil extraction plant enters the mineral oil system for further recovery of solvent. Solvent recovery can reduce solvent consumption and ensure safe production.


Crude Cottonseed Oil Refinery and Fractionation Plant

Cleaning Equipment: The main cleaning equipment for setting up canola oil extraction plant includes vibrating screen, gravity destoner, and magnetic separator. The cleaning process can remove the clay, stone, metal and other impurities in the rapeseeds and reduce the abrasion of canola processing machine, so that to ensure safe operation, reduce oil loss, increase oil yield and improve the quality of oil and oil cake.

Oilseeds Roaster / Cooker: Adopt rotary roaster or flat bottom roaster for rapeseeds cooking to achieve the desired temperature and moisture. The flat bottom roaster adopts conduction oil as the heat source and stirs the materials with the mixing blade. The rotary roaster has the rapeseeds turned within the rotating drum for uniform heating.

Canola Oil Press: With the aid of feeder, the roasted rapeseeds enter the rapeseed oil press machine. The worm rotates along with the main shaft to push the materials forward. With the reducing of the volume of the pressing chamber, the pressure within the chamber increases gradually. Rapeseed oil press machine is equipped with the automatic barrel heating system. Meanwhile, the friction force produces heat. The cells of the materials are destroyed and the oil flows out. When the oil flows onto the filtering barrel, by the vacuum pump, the oil is pumped into the barrel and the residues are left on the filter cloth, thus the pure oil is obtained.

Refinery machine is needed for establishing cooking oil factory.
  • Degumming: Degumming is to remove the phospholipids in the crude rapeseed oil. The crude oil is preheated and phosphoric acid is added.
  • Alkali Refining: Alkali refining is to remove the free fatty acids in the crude oil. Alkali acid is added to reacts with free fatty acid. When the soapstocks precipitate obviously, stop stirring and settle for several hours. Then remove the soapstocks. Preheat the clean oil and add hot saline-alkaline water. Settle and discharge the wastewater. Wash with hot water for several times.
  • Decolorization: Decolorization is to remove the pigments in the canola oil. Pump the oil into the decolorization tank and dehydrate under vacuum. Add bleaching clay and stir for 20 minutes. Then the oil is cooled and filtered.
  • Deodorization: Deodorization is to remove the odor substances in the oil. The decolorized oil is pumped into the deodorization tank for vacuum deodorization by steam distillation. The oil is then cooled and filtered.

Rapeseed Pre-treatment
This step typically involves using magnets to remove metal and screening to remove impurities that can interfere with the oil extraction process. The seed are then pre-condition with the heat in cooker. Mechanical rollers are used to make the seeds into thin flakes and rupture the cells and makes the oil easier to extract Finally, the seed is heated again and dried prior to mechanical oil pressing.

Mechanical Pressing
Screw type rapeseed oil press is used to expell canola or rapeseed oil from the prepared flakes. The seed is mechanically pressed (pre-pressed) to extract approximately three quarters of the available oil. The oilcake after oil expelling undergo further processing (solvent extraction) to remove the remaining oil. "Pre-press solvent extracting" is the most common method for large scale oil mill plant. Edible Oil Refining
Expeller pressed canola oil or solvent extracted canola oil must be further processed to make it edible oil or cooking oil. It is refined to improve the flavor, odor, color and stability using processes that degum, neutralize, bleach and deodorize the oil. These refining processes remove contaminants such as phosphatides, free fatty acids and pro-oxidants.






Further processing of oils and fats is sometimes desired. Some oils are winterized or dewaxed and some are modified to change melting characteristics. Byproducts may be further processed to create value-added products or reduce costs.
